About the AFL

old-aflAustralian Rules football has origins dating back to 1858, but the current AFL was formed back in 1897 under the name the VFL, with the league changing its name to the AFL in 1990 to represent the introduction of several interstate teams from outside of Victoria.

The current day AFL has eighteen teams and each team plays a total of 22 matches each season, with the top eight making The Finals.

The past twenty years has seen a huge change in the game with many new teams joining the league to make it a more national competition, plus huge money being invested into the game by broadcasters and the media, meaning every match is now televised live. The AFL attracts huge crowds too, in excess of 90,000 to some games making it one of the biggest spectator sports in the globe.

AFL Bet Types

luke-bruestThere are many different aspects to consider when betting on the AFL. Head to head betting remains the most common bet type and that simply involves just betting on the outcome of the match. The good thing about AFL, unlike soccer, is that there is rarely a draw so you basically only have two outcomes. In the case of a drawn match, you get half your stake back generally.

Many punters enjoy creating multibets on head to head outcomes, that means combining several bets into one bet by multiplying the odds of each match to get big payouts. Then you have bet types such as Line Betting where bookmakers create a points line for each team to cover which effectively makes the match even and giving you better odds.

Margin Betting is now very popular too with punters getting decent odds for backing a team to win by under or over 39.5 points. Then you have a range of different exotic type bet types such as the First Goal Scorer as well as betting on the first team to reach a certain amount, things like this.

How to Pick Winners

MoneyAhh, this is the age old question. If there was a magic formula, everybody would be a rich man. However there is certain information and trends that you can use to help your make an educated decision.

They say the best offence is a good defence and that certainly rings true in the AFL. Nearly every team that wins the premiership wins it on the back of a strong defence, so look for teams that can grind out results, while not necessarily being a high scoring team themselves.

Given there are two teams in both SA, WA, Qld and NSW, interstate teams are advantaged by having a whole state behind just two teams. So this means a strong home ground advantage and it is usually very tough for travelling teams to come away with wins. This works in reverse though, as interstate teams have to travel every second week.

It also pays to look at head to head record as certain teams have bunnies. For example Geelong have the wood over Hawthorn, Carlton have the wood over Richmond and St Kilda have the wood over Carlton. Those are just several examples, but there are many more.
